Dear Reader,
English has never been my strongest subject, even throughout High School. I have never been interested in learning how to write papers properly and have always struggled very much with it. I have had to take basic composition and composition one. I found those ended up not being so bad and I actually got good grades. I thought I had learned quite a bit in those classes, so I figured composition two would not be too bad. I started Composition two hoping I would do well and I would use the information I had taken in from the previous English classes to do awesome. Well, that is not how it happened. I had it online and it started out rough, while realizing I didn’t learn all of the things I needed to know in composition 2, which made me catch on really fast and ask tons of questions so I would not fail. I am proud to say that it took one horrible grade on a paper for me to start getting my stuff together and starting papers as soon as I got the assignment. I have learned to ask people around me how they feel on the subject I am going to write about and how to research different sources to get more information on it a as well. It takes me a long time to write a paper and I always get stuck on the second page, so starting it as soon as possible has helped me out quite a bit. I am proud of my accomplishments I have made in my writings.
While writing my first paper, I was asked to reach an audience I did not identify with. I had to write my paper on something I did not believe in, which made it very challenging. I had to just keep thinking I needed to make my readers believe what I was writing. This was my first submission, since it shows my knowledge was limited when writing it. I was afraid I would not be able to reach my audience, due to my lack of knowledge on the subject. I was not even able to completely finish my paper. I feel it just cut off right away and it needed more.
My second paper on my philosophy of guiding young children was choose second, considering I wrote it soon after my first paper, but it was for different class. This paper I knew I had to write about how I felt on the best ways to help guide young children. I pointed out everything I believed in and wrote it for an audience whom wanted to read what I had to say, as well as my professor who assigned it. I provided my philosophy in how I work with young children and why it worked for me. I gave examples of the reasons why it was best. It was very simple, since I just wrote what I already knew. I had to adjust it and proof read it many times to get it correct. I ended up getting full points, even though as I read it now I can find many mistakes. I can point those mistakes out now due to my gain of knowledge in English writing.
My third paper on how watching television does not make one smarter I choose next. It was my second essay in my composition two class. I wrote it for an audience that wanted to hear my reasoning’s on why television does not make people smarter. I had to do quite a bit of research for this paper. I knew what I believed in and added my research to it and was able to write this paper. I have many errors in this paper, I should of had input on this writing. I needed to have a friend read through it and give their opinions. I was able to take my professor’s notes while she graded this in order to better my future papers.
My fourth paper was on the importance on educating young children at an early age. I choose this paper to show how far I have come in my writing. I have been taking notes on what the professors had to say while grading my papers, it helps me to be a better writer. I have learned, the topics dealing with children I have excelled on, due to my knowledge of children. I feel I did a great job with minimal errors, showing that I am growing as a writer and becoming stronger each paper I write.
My last paper submitted in my portfolio is on the people of my community and also my last paper written in a composition class. I was able to use the knowledge I have on my community alongside with the people’s knowledge I had interviewed. It helped so much to talk to the people of my community. This paper shows how much I have grown as a writer from my first two essays I have submitted. I learned I just have to start my writing process earlier than I ever had before. I know now I need other people to help me proof read my work. When I can hear my paper read by another person I catch more mistakes. I have also learned better ways to outline before the actual writing. I have come a long way. I have learned even in my text messages, I am typing more proper than I ever have before.
I want to thank you for taking the time out to read my portfolio and learning how my writing is growing and getting better. During this semester, I was able to grow as a person to help me write better with the help of a few people.
